Sedimentation from landscape clearance-induced soil erosion threatens waterhole persistence in a semi-arid river system, southern Queensland, Australia

چکیده
Context In arid and semi-arid river systems, waterholes are often the only refugia for aquatic organisms during no-flow spells. Sediment accumulation in reduces their persistence.Aims To assess this threat, we surveyed depth of, dated, waterhole sediments from Moonie River, a northern tributary of Australia’s largest system, Murray–Darling Basin. Methods Fine-sediment was determined three deepest 2010 2011 before, after, flood over century. The rate sediment build up two also determined.Key results sections (>75th percentile depth), there between 0.7 2m fine 2010. Following flooding, reduced by 24–54%, with proportional reductions occurring shallowest waterhole. However, net is still 1.4–2.0cmyear−1 since 1950s.Conclusions Sedimentation has persistence 200days, representing an to 30% reduction. During longest droughts known would dry many otherwise permanent waterholes.Implications marked threat even following large floods.

The Landscape as a Unit for Rangeland Inventory in Arid and Semi-arid Regions of Iran
Severe range degradation was critically extended in many region of Iran and caused many rangelands were restricted and interwoven with croplands in a complex system. Therefore, rangeland planning and inventory as an isolated activity has become almost impossible. Current landscape planning involves contributions of different social organizations often with different interests and with different...
متن کاملInvestigation of Pedodiversity Indices, Soil Differentiation and Soil-Landscape Evolution in the Semi-Arid Region of Chaharmahal-Va-Bakhtiyari Province
Landscapes are considered as a series of different land units with a size, shape and location arrangement that are permanently under the influence of natural events and human activities. Understanding the dynamics and heterogeneity of landscapes and environmental changes is of great importance. In order to quantitatively analyze and interpret the factors affecting the changes in the environment...

متن کاملTemporal persistence and stability of surface soil moisture in a semi-arid watershed
Satellite soil moisture products, such as those from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR), require diverse landscapes for validation. Semi-arid landscapes present a particular challenge to satellite remote sensing validation using traditional techniques because of the high spatial variability and potentially rapid rates of temporal change in moisture conditions. In this study, temporal...
